THE Western Morning News today tells a rather different story from those usually connected to the war in Afghanistan. But it is one that we believe to be every bit as compelling, and in its way as important, as the many dramatic tales coming from the front line.

It is the story of the families left at home, and in particular of the wives and girlfriends who provide love and support for our fighting forces and suffer the agonies of conflict in just as powerful a way as their husbands and boyfriends who are out on the battlefields.
