It's on the cards that the Scottish National Party will emerge from the next General Election as a main beneficiary of Gordon Brown's unpopularity; he's even more disliked in his homeland than in England. Polls suggest the SNP could win 20 Westminster seats and it has been quietly co- operating with the Tories in Holyrood since forming Scotland's minority administration in 2007.

A poll in Scotland's Sunday Herald newspaper a year ago showed 41 per cent of Scottish voters in favour of full independence, well before the global economic recession arrived and despite Brown and Darling holding the top two Westminster Government posts.
