BP shares hit a 14-year low yesterday as the firm struggled to stave off market worries over a short-term funding crisis caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.

As much as Pounds 5.5 billion was wiped off the under-fire oil giant, with shares plunging nine per cent at one point to below 300p - levels not seen since August 1996.
