The oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico deserves our sympathy for all those people that live along its shores and depend on the sea for their livelihood and for recreation. A man-made disaster, fuelled by man's need for the 'black gold'. We have encouraged and allowed the oil companies to explore, find and extract the commodity, with virtually no limitations as to where or how.

It would be churlish to suggest that setting up oil wells in ecologically sensitive areas is a disaster waiting to happen. In allowing such exploration the world might expect that the companies involved would take every action to prevent disasters.
