THE Devon Farms Accommodation response to a suggestion to reduce the amount of meat served to tourists is fascinating - are all its members also supporters of the Flat Earth Society? It can't have escaped anyone's notice that the science linking livestock to global warming, deforestation, extinction of species, spread of deserts, nitrogen pollution, antibiotic-resistant superbugs and even swine flu and bird flu is now overwhelming. It is a huge problem - one of the biggest facing the globe, according to the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation.
I love the attitude of "how dare you encourage vegetarianism?" when, believe it or not, the stuff vegetarians eat is also grown by farmers. And it isn't just about grazing a bit of upland grass, either, but the fact that 80 per cent of all meat eaten - including nearly all pork, chicken, turkey and duck -comes from the obscenity of intensive factory farms.See the full content of this document
