In his excellent but sad article, Ian Pettyfer ("Time to bid Benn goodbye", Farming, February 4) misses the one, essential, point about "misguided regulations emanating from Brussels". Let me explain.

Forget the high-flown language of the original Treaty of Rome with its aim of "ever closer union"; the real intent of the EU's founders was to develop a common market that could be controlled by an unelected bureaucracy dominated by a Franco-German axis. Their means was to establish a centrist system of rules, regulations, and compliance procedures along the lines of the French and German systems. The French got the agricultural/fishing "pot"; the Germans the industrial "pot".
