Solitary Confinement Is Right Punishment ; Letters

Summary

An announcement on Radio 4, on May 28, stated that a youth had just been in court after committing an offence, and his case was adjourned for sentencing later this year. What should astonish us in this case is the fact that he admitted no less than 460 other offences. That must mean at least 460 people offended AGAINST, and presumably many thousands of pounds in Court costs, since that could hardly have been his first appearance.

This surely shows the ineffectiveness of our legal system. It is preached by the do-gooders that the correct remedy for all this mayhem is to educate the offenders. But we don't do this because it simply isn't affordable. These hooligans/criminals have BEEN educated, presumably by their parents and certainly by the state education system. If they can't take to heart the right message from all that expense, then we need to look for another remedy. And since all our restraints these days are null and void - religious indoctrination, physical punishment, in extreme cases the death penalty, and seemingly even being locked up at all until they've run amok time and time again, we need to think of some other treatment.
