The unfortunate experience of John Gedye (WMN, October 13) highlights the advisability of capturing dead or alive anything that bites or stings you.
While there is no doubt that the larger females of the so-called Common Garden (or Cross) spider can break skin, one needs to deliberately handle them or even grab their front legs to get bitten. But while it cannot be ruled out that one person is bitten or stung and is fine while another drops down dead, I have never had a reaction - even in childhood days - from the venom of this spider.See the full content of this document
