It was a lovely surprise to see the sceptical duffel-coated wonder back in action for this one-off special, exploring a spooky mansion where people disappear without trace from an isolated attic room.

There's a curious appeal about Jonathan Creek - teens, grannies and all ages in between seem to soften at the mention of his name. How a character with such a hangdog demeanour can foster such a warm feeling among viewers is a bit of a puzzle, but therein probably lies a clue. He has the look of a gloomy but loveable hound, which ties in very neatly with his nose for detection and a nice little story.
