Spring Gathering of Insects

Summary

Pussy willows in flower, just a tad early perhaps and here a few are growing high in a hedge overlooking a long winding valley. Male and female flowers are borne on different trees, the female catkins being silky and silver coloured. The showy, golden male catkins are a familiar sign of spring. Further along the lane where it is wetter, common sallow grows and probably both were cut and used as "palm" for Palm Sundays in churches.

This is a good place to visit to observe various insects, the willows being insect-pollinated and thus providing much to see for the budding entomologist.
