Did i hear this right - Gordon Brown wants to use the unemployed to lag the nation's roofs? Even Margaret Thatcher never went that far. When I was one of Maggie's Millions in the 80s, we were spat at, sneered at, told we were scum, and to get on our bikes by that knuckle-dragger Norman (now Lord) Tebbit. But the Tories at their most rabid stopped short of suggesting that millions of jobless should be converted into building materials.

How many of the indolent mass does Gordon envisage, and how many roofs? And how would the fitting service work? Would skinny people be lined up in rows, fat people jammed into the cavities, and short people used as offcuts or for awkward cornices?
