Take It Easy When Caring for Leather

Summary

Y ears ago old-time grooms spent hours and hours cleaning saddles and then applying Dubbin. Today the ranges of leather care products on the market makes life very much easier and horse owners are spoilt for choice. It's surprising how many owners frequently fail to read manufacturers' directions and apply products too often or over liberally - and are then disappointed with the results. Applying too much leather dressing - or saddle soaping over "jockeys" (the dark greasy looking dirt that sometimes spots the leather) can be as bad as not treating the leather at all.

The "too much" maxim can apply to the use of numnahs and pads. The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) advocates considered use - and this doesn't mean adding a heavyweight numnah and a couple of pieces of foam under a saddle in an attempt to improve a poor fit. The chances are that this will merely exacerbate an already bad situation. The same comments apply when a riser pad is inserted under a well-balanced saddle - the saddle will almost certainly become unbalanced and thus potentially the source of numerous problems.
