Appropriately, the story of his starry life in the kitchen, at the bar and in the vineyard, begins with a walk-on part for a thespian who helped set Stephen, then a young waiter, on the road to a career. Flashback to the late 1960s, and a fresh-faced Stephen is waiting tables in a St Ives restaurant.
