That was how General Sir Richard Trant, who was soon to become Deputy Commander in Chief (Land), learned the news that Britain was about to go to war. On that day, April 2, 1982, Sir Richard was based in Aldershot. Then a lieutenant general, he was GOC (General Officer Commanding) South East England.
