Science has never been my strong point. Fascinating though I find it on a superficial level, I get lost pretty swiftly when I try to delve more deeply. Biology I could cope with, but there's a good reason why I never took physics or chemistry O levels.

This mind-blowing documentary nestling under the Horizon umbrella underlined this lifelong deficiency. It lured me in with enticing strains of Elbow's Mirrorball and a backdrop of dark, starry skies and wooed me with footage of what looked like a fivestar hotel in the middle of the Chilean desert. Then I was dumped unceremoniously into a baffling world of extraordinary technology and seriously clever folk whose life mission is to discover more about our uncharted universe by developing ever more sophisticated telescopes. We're not talking the kind of long black tubes amateur astronomy enthusiasts point out of loft windows. These are in another league altogether - massive, complex structures that are redefining what the words telescope and universe mean.
