Summary
LA BELLA Italia, as Joyce Grenfell aptly called it in her Chianti- shire cut-glass accent, is one of my most favourite countries - and not just for the wine. To me some of Italy's greatest assets are its wonderful pasta; salamis and cured meats - especially the ethereal, girth-enhancing Lardo; amazing sun-draped tomatoes; eye-watering cultural history and a wealth of vibrant characters, all as mad as a bag of eels. Not to mention the musical, trance-inducing language that leaves me soporific with awe.
It is also one of the most frustrating countries, especially in terms of their wines. Now, don't get me wrong, I love their wines madly and completely, nearly without exception, but they don't make life easy for us consumers.
