Summary
Went down to check the stock on our chiggy pig farm and find they have done very well this year. I like to see them about, handsome little creatures and busy in one or two moist areas where I've made log piles and put a few big stones about. Chiggy pigs are woodlice of course, crustaceans that are land based, seeking damp places so as not to become desiccated. Indeed much of their life is spent avoiding desiccation and sunlight, so if a well used lair begins to dry out we may see them on the move to find a safer spot, though normally they are about by night when humidity is higher.
Females are often encountered with eggs or young, carried in a special brood pouch beneath the body. Growth is slow, with periodic moults. Maturity is not reached for about two years.See the full content of this document
