Universities are facing tough times. The government is withdrawing much of their financial support while calling for them to show their relevance and reach out to the wider community. At the same time, with the introduction of tuition fees as high as Pounds 9,000, some fear pupils from poorer backgrounds may soon be discouraged from entering higher education.

The woman at the helm of the UK's first Marine Academy believes they are developing a model to face these challenges and give their students the best possible opportunities for the future.

Firm Hand On the Tiller of Uk's First Marine Academy ; the Saturday Interview Eleanor Gaskarth Meets Helen Mathieson, Headteacher of the Uk's First Marine Academy, and Finds Her in a Determined Mood to Succeed

Helen Mathieson's vision for a "virtual highway" linking her pupils to the University of Plymouth is an ambitious scheme that would see them taking some of their lessons on campus, with full access to University resources and lecturers also visiting the school to teach.

She is just three months into the first-ever term at Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP), formerly the troubled Tamarside Community College in the St Budeaux area of the city.
