Summary
Mulching: Lay mulch on beds to hold remaining summer warmth in the soil and keep down weeds in the spring. It helps to prevent soil erosion and surface compaction in heavy rains, absorbing run-off and reducing puddling. For weed-suppression, make sure loose mulches are at least 7cm (3in) deep, but remember you will need to irrigate more in dry spells.
Choose organic mulches to rot down slowly and improve the soil. They are also a good way to recycle garden and agricultural waste.
