Former Torquay Favourite Frustrates United ; Bowls

Summary

TORQUAY United, who were hotly tipped to win the national Top Club title in Torquay yesterday, fell at the final hurdle, with former club star Sian Gordon delivering the killer blow for Sittingbourne-based Swale club, who won 8-2. Gordon, who won the women's national indoor singles title and skipped a Torquay United quartet to the English fours title in 2009, has since moved to Kent, and relished her role yesterday. In the final, playing in the women's singles event, she met Barbara Bellamy, her lead in the fours last year, and won 15-11, United managing a winning card in only one of the five disciplines.

Joe Melmore who claimed that solitary win and two points for the Torquay side, beating Perry Martin, 18-11, while brother-and-sister Sam and Sophie Tolchard were edged out, 17-15 in the pairs.
