Earlier this week I received a telephone call from a reader who said she was "ringing with trepidation" and fearful of being a nuisance with just a simple query. At least she picked up the phone.

But, if a recent survey by Zurich is anything to go by, nearly 60 per cent of the population does not go anywhere near a financial adviser. Surveys can be misleading but the fact that the majority of people retiring with personal pensions do not use the Open Market Option to obtain the best possible income in retirement suggests that this survey has some merit in it.
