Triathlon Returns to Exmoor

Summary

Exmoor will again host the UK Ironman 70.3 triathlon at Wimbleball Lake this weekend. This year's triathlon, a qualifying event for the world championships, is expected to attract athletes from around the work. The event comprises a 1.2-mile swim, a 56- mile bike race and a 13.1-mile run. Around 1,500 athletes will be competing for one of the 100 qualifying slots for the inaugural Ford Ironman 70.3 World Championships, which will be held in Clearwater, Florida. Spectators are welcome to attend the event, which begins at 6am on Sunday.

A pounds500 grant from Somerset County Council's Community Chest Fund has helped the Minehead Sailing and Watersports Club buy a new boat. The fibreglass sea-going rowing boat replaces an ageing wooden model. The 25ft long, four-oar Celtic Longboat was officially named and launched at the club's open day on June 10. The boat has been named George Leicester, which is the name of the first Minehead lifeboat that took to the seas more than 100 years ago.
