Some ten million people were swept up in the intrigue of TV drama Downton Abbey when it aired on ITV last autumn, writes Sarah Pitt. And the upstairs-downstairs shenanigans of the titled Crawley family and their servants were set off by specially designed costumes, authentic to the story's 1912 setting.
