For 10 years the industry worked with DWT towards securing in Lyme Bay the continued well-being of the "most sensitive areas (of reefs)", "particularly vulnerable to damage from mobile fishing gear". Mr Gompertz told us: "Any proposals which provide protection for wildlife but result in loss of income are not seen as acceptable solutions." Areas proposed for fishing restrictions would have "maximum benefit for wildlife and minimum impact on the fishing industry"... "We believe the local fishermen... protect local marine wildlife sites themselves."
