THE weather - fingers crossed - has taken a turn for the better this weekend. But that doesn't mean a holiday company's offer to "insure" visitors against a wet week will no longer attract much interest from tourists who have yet to book their break.

These are competitive times for the tourist industry. Holidaymakers are looking for value-for-money as well as a good time this summer. And if they can claim back up to 10 per cent of their holiday cost if it rains, they might well be persuaded to chose our region over another. Of course, this is a gimmick. But gimmicks are used all the time to attract visitors. Ask 1,000 people their recipe for a good summer holiday and what's the betting "good weather" comes out in the top five requirements? Sadly in Britain, good weather cannot be guaranteed. In fact, in recent years, it has looked like the only safe guarantee to make about British summer weather is that it will be wet.
