Watching the Wildlife

Summary

A flock of goldfinches, mostly young ones, feed along the tideline, searching for seeds. They are a lovely sight, like colourful scattering leaves, their twittering calls adding to the early morning. There had been a light shower of rain but a half dozen common darter dragonflies perched along the top bar of a gate, doing a bit of gate leaning.

Along the bank some 30 yards from us a stoat stood watching the goldfinches, the whole flock flying close by it, going on their way to a field of thistles nearby. The stoat looked our way then moved casually into brambles where we have known stoats to live for many years. It is a spot filled with voles, mice, rats and rabbits often hunted over by barn owls and ideal stoat country. We see foxes here, too, as well as buzzards and kestrels, the area well known by predators for its abundance of food.
