I don't mean to raise unnecessary alarm, but I do find it worrying that there seems to be more foot and mouth disease around the world just now than for many years, and that some of the worst of it is right on the EU's doorstep, on the border between Turkey and Greece.

Much of the biggest of the current outbreaks started in North Korea late last year, and has spread subsequently to South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, Tibet, China and, most recently, Russia. Ominously, that is very similar to the pattern of spread that preceded the 2001 outbreak here.
