Weather forecasters would not have failed to predict 1987's Great Storm and warn people about the dangers if it happened today, the Met Office in Exeter said yesterday.

Technological improvements - including computers which are several hundred times more powerful than those used in 1987 - would make it "highly likely" the storm would have been predicted, chief meteorologist Ewen McCallum said.
