Summary
Two weeks ago our national press devoted pages of newsprint to detailing the short and tragic life of Amy Winehouse. Some days later fewer column inches were given over to the death of an elderly clergyman who had lived, worked and died within a few hundred yards of Oxford Street, London. Yet I have no hesitation in saying that his impact on our society has been greater than many others who take priority in our obituary pages.
He was ordained in his midtwenties and served the congregation of All Souls Church, next door to Broadcasting House, for the whole of his life. Yet all over the world thousands upon thousands of people have spoken of the way he has influenced and shaped their lives. Church institutions and organisations too have benefitted from his academic and theological rigour. His passion for ensuring that faith is not simply a matter for academic debate but needs to be applied in every area of life. His books sold in their millions around the globe. One - Basic Christianity: an accessible explanation of what it means to be a Christian - has been in print continually for more than 50 years. All the royalties from this were used to enable pastors and ministers in the developing world to be equipped for the work God had called them to do.See the full content of this document
