Summary
Kivells, Bude, are holding on Thursday a special sale of contemporary pictures and prints, having been asked to sell the collection of Donald Phillips of Higher Downgate, Callington. Comprising mainly Westcountry artists, works include a study of Bull Point in North Devon by Lewis Mortimer (fl.1920-1930), showing a crystal clear blue sea beyond a grassy rocky outcrop.
In original gold mount, it measures 14.5 x 10.5in (37 x 27cm) and will ask pounds60-pounds100, but a more lively interpretation of a landscape is by Leslie Marr (b.1922) from Durham, who studied under David Bomberg at the London Polytechnic before becoming a member of the Borough Group, of which he was secretary from 1946 to 1951. This is certainly a more individual portrayal - but Marr would appear to have been torn between art and motor racing, as he came 13th in the Silverstone Grand Prix of 1954 when he raced his private Connaught.See the full content of this document
