He contrast was stark. When Gordon Brown strode into Downing Street for the first time as PM he delivered a short speech that was serious, austere - dull even. He pledged to "do my utmost" and announced "let the work of change begin".

Meanwhile, David Cameron was uploading some jolly chatter on his website, filmed with Big Ben in the background. He was all smiles and sunshine, saying Mr Brown had no mandate and should call an election.
