HOW RECKLESS would it be for the Labour Party to change its leader now, with a General Election just around the corner? A few bumbling efforts have been made by people who think they are capable of supplanting Gordon Brown, but still the presumption remains that Labour is stumbling on towards a heavy defeat under the plodding leadership of the present Prime Minister.

But is there now a glimmer of light? Is it now possible that the party will take the plunge and risk putting that love-hate figure Peter Mandelson at the helm? It all seems hugely unlikely. But wait a minute. Legislation is going through Parliament which would enable the Business Secretary to renounce his life peerage, find a safe Labour seat (if any now exist) and return to the Commons as the conquering hero.
