If the FA Cup is a competition that players are supposed to look forward to and one where they rise to the challenge in their role as either David or Goliath, then no one told Exeter City on Saturday. The Grecians were at their absolute worst in crashing out at the first-round stage by two goals to nil against a Bury side who taught them a lesson in doing the uglier side of things in football.

The Shakers were deserved winners with a performance based on sheer hard work. They closed City down, they got stuck in, they attacked with conviction, pace and numbers and they defended resolutely once they had taken the lead. Exeter looked lethargic, battle weary and pedestrian and anything but a side from a higher division.
