It was with a strange mixture of anger and wry reflection that I heard of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's aid package for Peugeot and the strings he attached to it. In providing a g3 billion loan to the car maker, he warned that it was "not so we can hear about a new plant moving to the Czech Republic or wherever".

Three years ago, when I led UKIP, we protested about the EU Commission's direct role in events leading to the closure of Peugeot's plant in Ryton, Coventry. Peugeot asked our Government for help to guarantee the plant's future, but EU "state aid" rules meant the DTI had to get permission from Brussels before it could give a grant of pounds16 million.
