Summary


I can remember my first appearance in the school nativity play. It was a significant moment because it got me out of (albeit temporarily) a dental appointment. My visit was scheduled right in the middle of the big performance and the headmistress was having none of it. So it was that I got to stand in front of a packed hall and declare: "Fear not, said the angel." There was more to it than that, but what sticks in my mind almost half a century later is that declaration.

The angels often found themselves telling people not to be afraid during that first Christmas. Mary was astonished by the appearance of an angel bringing news every Jewish girl was encouraged to hope for but never dreamed of hearing: that she would be the mother of the Messiah. Joseph was thinking through all that this would mean for his hopedfor marriage, for his reputation, for his future. He too, through a dream, heard the angel say, "Fear not."
